Deciding to heal

Deciding to heal.

Medical intervention is life saving.  We know this.  Those who save lives are totally incredible and we need eternal gratitude for all those who have been touched by these lives.

There is zero doubt in my mind about this.  There are times, we simply need help.
My final year of my degree has highlighted the importance of taking control of ones own health, mind, body and as always, spirit (although that’s not often mentioned in my science degree.)  Biochemistry, physiology and the body is a miracle.  How does everything work together so synchronously for us to thrive as humans?  Honestly, I believe a certain degree of miracle must be present.  Being designed so beautifully, our cells and organelles are factories for our health, without them, no oxygen. Without oxygen, no life.  Without lungs, no oxygen…..you see my point.  Symbiosis is truly ever present and when things go wrong, we sometimes need to ask why.

Laying blame is wrong.  No one wants to be sick.  No one chose to make himself or herself ill.  Yet the chronic diseases we see so prevalent in this world are often preventable. This is a fact.  Yet do we know how?  Why do we suffer such illnesses?  Can they be reversed?
Research, research, research.
The information is out there.  Sadly, often our doctors simply do not have the time to go through finer details and we could be left in wonder of what to do next.

Finite details might just switch on the knowledge or motivation for change.
I have a story rather like this.

Forever a sick child,  we were given antibiotics on most occasions. There was a time the primary reason for visiting the doctors was to ‘get some antibiotics’. Now we know this is not the best route to take in all occasions, yet life saving in others.  Finally we know that antibiotics are to fight bacterial infections, hence the name.  My teenage years were also troubled with health issues which carried on through infertility, hormonal and other chronic pain manifestations.
My symptoms here will not be described in detail but please be aware of a few descriptions approaching.
Many surgeries, all non specific and seemingly unrelated, followed and a general feeling of not being my best came to a head in 2009. Shocking issues from the gut we stopping me in my tracks. Putting on the brakes of life until the symptoms were so bad I was heavily loosing blood all day, every day.  The GP seemed to think more surgery might be needed and gave me a follow up appointment which was definitely not treated as urgent.  Things got worse, I ended up in the hospital and after surgery and biopsies I was told they were looking for harmful tumors.
How could I share this with my parents?  They already buried my brother and there was only me left.  You can’t help but think of the worst-case scenario but I should have worked harder on relaxing inside as much as my outer appearance seemed.

During the surgery, I was informed that my colon was heavily ulcerated.  They suspected ulcerative colitis.  Immediately I began research.  Specifically into Inflammatory bowel conditions.  It’s known as IBD and is the collective term for crohns and colitis.  Being inflamed anywhere in the body is not a good place to be. Yet already I was motivated and determined to do what I could to help myself.

Results were in. The biopsies showed Crohns disease.  A disease from anywhere from mouth to anus in the digestive system.  It will also have the ability to penetrate right through the tissue layers which is life threatening.  Alongside gastritis, a hiatus hernia and flattened villi (showing Coeliac disease – a gluten allergy).  So, while this sounded a pretty grim story and the potential need for lots of surgery, I became determined.

Burning candles at my desk late into the night, I was busy reading more and more, going deeper and deeper while I waited for more medical appointments.  Finding a diet detailing The Specific Carbohydrate diet, I read a book by Elaine Gottschall “Breaking the Vicious cycle” and read it cover to cover in one sitting.  Why had I never heard of all this stuff?  You can heal from your nutrition?  You can heal your gut and it changes everything, even mindset! I was astonished.

Immediately I requested an appointment with a dietitian at the local hospital and I began eating the way the book instructed instantly.
Science moves on quickly and I’m pleased to say that today, the NHS does now recommend the low FODMAP diet for those struggling with digestive health which is not too dissimilar to the Specific carbohydrate diet.  Yet in 2009 I left the dietitian clinic in floods of tears when they spoke to me of ‘a varied and balanced diet’ and showed me the Eatwell Plate full of grains and starches.  Inside I was screaming but remained polite.   I knew this was wrong as I had already begun eating bone broths and eliminating sugars as well as the gluten which had been harming my body all these years through allergy.
My gastroenterologist gave a long list of prescriptive medicine for me to use.  Two of them were essential at the time but turned me inside out with pain so I got off those as soon as I could possibly do safely.  We had a heated conversation; I was frustrated – his exact words, “You can’t deal with crohns without medication or surgery.”  I cried.  I would. I was determined.  I knew what I had read.  Keeping an open mind to what he said was unthinkable.

Continuing to spend much time in the kitchen with careful preparation of my nutrition, continuing to research, beginning to wear bikinis in case he was right and I needed abdominal surgery….everything changed.
Beginning a running regime I was determined to run a race in totality.  Just 5k, that would do.  Dance has always been my passion and I began to compete, doing great with my amazing dance partner and ending up finalists of the nationals from 160 couples down to 5.  We didn’t win but that didn’t matter.
My body transformed unrecognizably.  I was feeling fit and well, my horrific symptoms I saw before surgery disappeared within 3 weeks.
The following summer, for the first time, I had no hay fever.  My constant ear infections which also needed previous surgery and I lost my hearing bones in one ear, had gone.  Totally.
Never in my life had I felt so amazing.

More difficult conversations with the gastroenterologist led to a place of ‘agreeing to disagree’.  I knew then that diet was the key to making significant improvements.  While this was a dramatic way of eating, it was necessary to heal.  Being transparent, things have slipped since and I can feel it. But easily, I pull things back and see the same wonderful results over and over.

They say you are what you eat.  You definitely are a product of your absorption.  While my degree has taught me much about the systems of metabolism I feel the important lesson to pass on is to listen to your body.  This far, 9 years later I am blessed to still be in better health without surgery or medication.  My crohns went into remission after 3 weeks and that is where it has stayed.

* If you have any health concerns I would always recommend seeking the advice of a health professional as well as listening to your body.

Food Matters Live 2017

Yesterday saw an exciting day in my nutrition world.
The excel centre, London, host to Food matters Live.

A Myriad of colours to feast my eyes on in the food department and some beautiful stands too.  Great graphic design and marketing designs.  Blew me Away!

Having never visited before I was excited and unsure what to expect.  In my years as a salon consultant, I visited the Excel for Hairdressers Journal international and Salon international.

Which occupied the entire one side of the building.  So, being me, I proudly (efficiently having printed my ticket already) walked up to the person with the bar code scanner to enter the room.
"Wrong show, you need S2."  Opps.  This one was still medical so I guessed that would be us.
Yet I soon figured out (especially after bumping into my old dietetics lecturer) that this is sort of less medical and kind of more for industry.  Lots of 'free from' and 'vegan' and natural products.  For me, that leads to health anyway, especially the free from stuff.  Have you tried eating foods you have an allergy or intolerance to?  Hmm.  Say no more!

Well let me say, I was blown away by the seemingly simple things I learned, such as how vegetables and fruit can be used as a natural food colouring, how so many people have the balls to launch into an industrial kitchen and get their products out there in places like Planet Organic and Holland and Barrett.

The Exhibitors gladly shared their stories of business with me and I'm overwhelmed at how excited both them and I became while chatting about this.

Since the show, I have been giving lots of thought to all I absorbed.  Please keep watching as I will share details of such companies through this blog and my youtube channel and let you have a look at their products and website links etc.

My passion for all things health and wellness through food is exactly back where it needs to be thanks to these exhibitions.  I'm fired up and ready to go into the future of my research and dissertation!

What food should you be eating?

The million dollar question.

What should you be eating?  What will suit your body?  Should we all eat the same and follow the same rules?

Great question. It seems few, if any, have the answer.  I don't; that's for sure.

Using my own health and body as an experiment I have been up, down and sleepy all at the same time! Just as I seem to find one answer, another health issue crops up.  Yet there are positives, there do seem to be a few consistent pieces of advice.

Drink water

We all know this one don't we.  Frequently I can be found guilty as not drinking the recommended 2 litres per day.  Yet seldom do you see one diet plan or piece of advice that suggests ignoring water.
So do it.  And see.

Track your food

A few gurus say just eat.  A few say you can control your weight with your mind.  Whatever you do with your mind, nothing happens without action being taken.  Without tracking your food you are unlikely to be mindful of what is likely to go on in your body.  I always recommend www.myfitnesspal.com to all clients as a great app to pop every single thing that goes into your body on.  You can log weight too! More about that in another post.

Without tracking you are likely  to eat 'imaginary' or 'invisible' food.  You know, the type that you will away from your hips  - playing make believe that you ever ate that in the first place!

Of course, this is not all about weight loss.  Should you have some symptoms or other, tracking is a fantastic way to keep an eye on what is making you feel really quite lousy.  As an example, I had gone hard and fast keto lately to aim to bring blood sugars down.  It hasn't been working and I have been feeling terrible.  Working with my Dr to see if this is something else or if indeed I need to change my diet, tracking has helped amazingly.

Should you prefer pen and paper, get a jazzy book (small one to fit in your bag) and carry it along with you.

You're welcome :)

Why we need vitamin D at this time of year

Yesterday we saw the shortest day of the year here in the north.  Some celebrate the solstice.
Some chase around for last minute Christmas gifts.

All the while, your dear body is taking care of everything just the best it can.  Renewing cells,  fighting off infections and viruses and protecting you constantly.

What our bodies cannot do is the impossible.

During the months of October and March we simply do not have enough sunshine to help us out properly.

Sunshine?

Yes,  we need vitamin D in our bodies and the best way to get this is from the sun.  This might well not be a surprise to you.  You may know this already.  In the summer months we can get a little sunshine each day and naturally make the vitamin D we need.  So what do we do in the winter?

Often, the best way to ensure you don't suffer from a deficiency is to take a Vitamin D supplement*.  You know me, I do like all molecules going into the body to be the best they can be and I have found this little gem which is free from all the stuff I personally need to avoid.

After trying out this product and speaking to my friends at Epsilon life they have given me lots of information about their wonderful product.  If you click below you can see the reviews on Amazon which are pretty impressive I must say.

As readers of my blog, you can enter LUSHERLIFE at the checkout for an extra cheeky discount code! Spread the word.

So what would taking Vitamin D supplements mean for you?

If you suffer from any of the following, it may be worth visiting your GP to get your vitamin D levels checked.  You might just need a simple supplement which is such a minimal investment in terms of finance and it could make the world of difference.

Fatigue and tiredness.
Muscle cramps and spasms.
Depression.
Erectile disfunction.
Osteoporosis.
Light headedness.
General aches and pains.

Yes the body is a miracle.  Every time I revisit information on the cell and biochemistry, I am blown away.  While nothing is a substitute for a well balanced diet and doing things 'au natural' we occasionally need some help.

Speaking with Epsilon they gave me this extra information:
  • Epsilon.Life gives a portion of every sale to a Multiple Sclerosis charity
  • We are the highest and best reviewed vitamin products on Amazon.co.uk Our vitamin D has a five star rating and close to 600 reviews.
  • We are a small family run business and provide outstanding customer service to all of our customers
  • All of our products are manufactured and sold exclusively in the UK
  • We focus on selling only a small number of products, that way we can make sure that all of our products are of the best quality
  • Any orders over £15 (with or without a discount) qualifies for free shipping

As I had mentioned, we are happy to offer all of your readers a voucher code giving them £5 off any order. They can use this code on our checkout page to get £5 off any order: LUSHERLIFE

New year is just around the corner (my birthday too!). I know we all like to make health a priority and if you order today, you will be ready to go on January 1st when you feel fresh and new and ready to make a difference to your health and your life.

Of course, I will be here to hold your hand every step of the way!

Wishing you the very best in health

3 top tips to keep healthy this Christmas

3 Top tips to keep healthy this Christmas time

As you are fully aware, Christmas is upon us and it is typically a time we neglect our health and our bodies.  If you are feeling low, under the weather or just a bit grumpy, chances are you might need a little health boost.

Even though you may have heard these simple tips before,  I am here to remind you!

  1. Drink water!

Yes, I know you know.  But are you drinking or not?  If not why not.  Want a hot drink?  Drink hot water.
During the winter, the heating is typically on in the house which will have a dehydrating effect on the body.  Without water,  not only will your skin start to look a bit shrivelled but you can’t function the same either.
Being that the body, and cells, are made up so much of water it makes total sense that we need to keep hydrated.

Drinking more alcohol will need a good flush.  Removing toxins needs a helping hand with water.  Toxins floating around in the body will help you play host to viruses like coughs and colds.

2.  Get some sleep

As we all chase our own tails at Christmas time,  it is easy to forget to get an early night.  Without that extra hour before midnight, it is easy to want to pull up the duvet for an extra 5 minutes.

You will create dark circles under the eyes, you will stop thinking so sharply and often you will find you don’t function so efficiently.

3.  Eat some vitamin c

Not only will it help you fight off colds and flu (you knew that - right?) but citrus fruits this time of year are delightful.  Well, Satsumas specifically.  The supermarket will sell you a packet from £1-£2 and satsumas make an excellent snack.  Healthy.  Provides you with energy from the natural sugars.

When you pour your drink (alcohol or soft drink) why not add a splice of lemon.

Going for coffee?  Ask for a glass of lemon water.  Coffee will make your body become acidic.  The lemon water gets you back into the favourable alkaline state once again.

Keep healthy, happy and smile lots.

Eating badly; feeling awful

Family celebrations,  poor excuses,  life,  bad day at work... what is your reason to eat badly?

Yesterday,  we were celebrating in my family.  Despite the fact of keeping a gluten free approach (with special cupcakes from Lolas) and choosing a 'proper dinner' in the local Brewers Fayre I still ended up feeling rubbish.

Tummy ache, heart flutters,  general overwhelming tiredness.

Is it just me?  And my issues with Crohns disease?  I'm not sure if it was that or just that my symptoms have been overly exaggerated recently due to my clean eating and intermittent fasting.  Either way,  I am feeling super inspired today to eat better and eat the way that my body is screaming out for me to eat!

Perhaps there is an element of me that wanted to indulge due to the looming colonoscopy on Tuesday.  I don't think so, I think it was about making bad choices and ending up paying sorely for it overnight!

While I have tried so hard to give myself a break (guessing that university is going to educate me into avoiding exclusion diets) and even writing a book about "Lightening up" I still find that I have that belief in me where I really do feel better for eating better!

What about you?  Have you had a day recently that has motivated you into wanting to change things?

Get in touch,  let me know!

This weeks Podcast will have me talking about what I need to eat prior to a colonoscopy.  Come over and subscribe.

The best way to lose weight

This is a question asked by many over and over.  How do I lose weight successfully?

Every magazine you see on the shelves seems to have the answer.  So you buy it, apply the methods, lose a bit of weight then carry on eating in the same patterns that made you gain the weight in the first place.

True?

Ok, so this post is to help you make the first step.

What is the first step?  This is going to sound easy and insulting..

Decide that you want to lose weight.

Let nothing stop you.  Let nothing get in your way.  Make the decision and stick to it.

If you are a person always making excuses and looking for the magic answer then try stopping that for a while.

Fads and 'diets' seem to be a quick fix which is so tempting.  Especially when you have left it to the very last minute to try and squeeze into that dress.
Are you nodding in agreement?

Have you been trying to search for a reason that despite not eating much, you are still gaining loads of weight.  Perhaps you work hard at the gym and still nothing is working.

I have tried it all.  I've also seen my clients try it all.  Only one way works.  It's very old fashioned and you might not like it when I tell you that there is no magic pill that will allow you to wake suddenly and be that perfect size 10.

Calories in needs to be less than calories out.

You need to get moving.  Get the lymph system taking out the junk, toxins and all the other 'stuff' that causes your body to under perform.

A long term approach is the one that works.  Without deprivation. If you feel deprived you will be feeling negative.  Negative feelings will encourage you to quit.

However,  here is the good news.

Nutritional experts encourage treats!!!

Yes, thats right.  If you apply the 80/20 rule,  you can have treats.

So,  what is the 80/20 rule?

This is where for 80% of the time you will eat nutritionally balanced meals.  And enough of them (and frequently enough) to make your body burn energy effectively, but also under your output of calories.

For 20% of the time,  you are able to eat 'treats'.  Those things you go without when you are on a crash diet.

If you follow this rule for several weeks, you will be amazed at the difference you see in your heath and fitness levels, and in the numbers on the scales!

Let me know your stories of weight loss and successes.
Do you have a Youtube channel where you share your stories?  I can pop a link on this blog for you to encourage others.

Personally, I love to recommend to all my clients that they download an app called My fitness pal.  This will calculate your perfect calorie intake for you and you can keep track of everything you eat on there too.  You can even set goals and congratulate yourself when you meet those goals.

Good luck!

How a client left me exhausted

As promised from the last blog,  I am going to share with you the mentality of weight loss clients who are very hard to
  1. Believe
  2. Change their mentality
  3. Help to lose weight

Just last week, I saw a client who was morbidly obese.  She was a wonderful lady and took great care in her appearance.  From this, I concluded that surely, weight loss would be of importance to her.  As she sat in my chair which was difficult for her,  she began to tell me all the best ways you can lose weight.  I sat for a few minutes in awe of her wonderful advice.  She certainly knew a few things.  yet, many she got wrong.

You must eat 3 meals a day. Or even 6 smaller ones.

Is this right?  Well,  you must consistently fuel the body in order to keep the metabolism active and stop it from becoming sluggish.  Not too sure about 6 meals.  That one is open for abuse by many clients who would eat 6 dinner type meals each day.  That’s not the idea.

Then she proceeded to tell me how she doesn’t eat much.

This is a trap that many overweight clients fall into.  Often they will not eat all day but consume more than their calorie allowance just before bed.  This lady however was different.  It took a good 5 minutes of justification for her to let me know why she made her bacon sandwich with 3 slices of bread instead of the usual 2 for breakfast.  This suggests she is in denial.  As many clients are.

There is always a reason that the ‘cutting down’ starts tomorrow.

Then, after ‘trying everything’ they give up because they are over 50 now and it gets harder so they might as well stay like that.  I get frustrated.  I want to remind this lady that she will live longer and healthier if she loses weight now.  Giving up is like not going on holiday as you are waiting to die.

Chances are they haven’t tried everything.  If you create a calorie deficit for a period of time,  you will lose weight.  Assuming no other health issues such as thyroid.  This can easily be checked by the doctor.

There are any ways to get help to lose weight.  See your GP and ask for referral to a dietitian.  This can sometimes have a waiting list,  so you could invest in some private consultations if you prefer.  GP can also now prescribe you a number of weeks at a weight loss group.

Yet all of this said,  the work of losing weight is all down to you.  People like me can help, for sure, but it does come down to you wanting it bad enough that you will not only try but you will do everything it takes to succeed.  Sometimes people say it can be really hard.  I have a few tips up my sleeve which can help you.  Feel free to email me to find out more for free and also follow this blog.

You will be surprised to find that it can be as easy as keeping a log of what you eat and you can still have some treats too.  Want to know more?

Are carbs the enemy?

So if you've been watching your carb intake,  you might be noticing differences and changes in your body.

Some will be changes you want,  some won't.

Carbohydrates are a source of energy provider for the body.  When we eat carbs,  we convert them into a useful energy which we can then burn throughout our day.  Maybe you already know that.  Ok, so what happens when you eat less carbs?

On occasion,  you might initially drop some extra water you have been hanging onto.  This isn't a bad thing.  Keep an  eye on your fluid intake and just make sure you are hydrated at all times.

Folks who eat very low carb diets (VLC) can sometimes put the body into a state of "Ketosis".  This means that there are no stores of sugar for energy in the body and you will be burning fat reserves to use for energy.  During this transition,  you often find that there will be a lull in energy before a spike.

Ancient times showed us that occasionally,  fasting (and hence getting into Ketosis) can aid the body with repair,  digestion and just give it a good old break.  Also,  many individuals report that illnesses such as Epilepsy can find relief of symptoms from keeping the body in Ketosis.

So when are carbs a good thing?

If you have no extra fat to burn and use as an energy supply,  you will need to ingest more energy in the form of carbs.  Without this,  you could create more issues as the body looks elsewhere for energy such as the muscles and eventually,  your organs.

Carbs are not the enemy in my opinion.  Overeating can be and folks often get the two confused.

What are carbs?

Very often,  clients speak to me about carbs.  They think they are things like bread,  doughnuts and outer dough made items.  Often these items have yeast added too which can cause issues for those intolerant of yeast and if bloating issues arise,  carbs get blamed when in fact it may simply be the yeast.

There are healthy carbs too.  It doesn't mean flour.  It means food sugars.  The best way to think of healthy carbs are items with natural sugars such as fruit and honey.

Carbohydrates are a main nutrient that we are designed to eat.  In the right way of course.
A healthy balance of all nutrients within your best calorie range is what will serve you best.

How's the 'diet' working for you?

Are you on a diet? It's such a massive subject isn't it!

There seems to be a 'pull' in the direction of wanting to get slim and 'going on a diet'.

We see all over the magazines that we could lose a stack of weight in just a week and still get all fired up to try it.  Yet we still seem to be ignoring the fact that....

DIETS DON'T WORK...

And here's why.

Now I realise this is bad news for most of us as we just want a little bit of magic in our lives to make us feel better, slimmer, more energetic.... but it's a change for life that we need.  Not a quick fix.

How many friends do you hear talking about their recent slimmers diet and they say, "as soon as you start eating normally again it all just goes straight back on."

If you want to know the reason for this, read on...

It's not so much that the weight goes straight back on or as some say 'clings to me as I've been starving myself' or whatever crazy excuse they come up with,  it's because of this:

The reason the person, or you, needed a slimming diet in the first place is because something was going wrong with your everyday diet.  Too many calories, too much junk food.  Likely just too much.  So,  as soon as you start eating too much once again,  you will gain weight.  Now there are theories behind this such as it slows your metabolism and so you end up storing more fat.

Hmm, a possibility.

Although I suspect far more than that it's simply that you have not changed any habits whatsoever.  Which is the HARD bit.  Things are so tasty out there and we are in a lovely social fashion of going out for coffee and a cake and it gets very tempting.  I recognise this too.  However..... changes need to be made in order to sustain a new you.  This starts from day one and must follow right through until after you get your ideal body.  Yes... that's right,  it's a life change.

Now no need to thank me for sharing this information with you for you see while you might want to click off from the truth in favour of a quick one week diet and then back to eating what caused the unhappiness in the first place,  you need to listen up about the 80/20 rule.

The 80/20 rule

Ok so here's the really good news.

You don't need to be an angel.  You can still have what you call 'treats'.

If you eat healthily for 80% of the time (be honest with yourself) then you will be fine to eat other things for 20% of the time.  This will only work if this is always the way you do it and only if you do it for good.

Accepting this is the first part of the mindset for you.  Diets, slimming and health are all about balance, mindset and motivation.  If you would like to know more I will be addressing lots of this on the blog here so make sure you sign up.

Feel free to email me any questions you have and I will be addressing these over on my Youtube channel later on.

Wishing you the very best of health.

Nutrition advice - Youtube channel

Hey folks

Here's the thing.  I need your help really.  I am in the throws of designing and updating my Youtube channel.  This is the channel which relates directly to the stuff I talk about on this blog.

I did wonder if I should begin just adding the new videos to the Youtube channel I already own which is gaining in subscribers.  Although having learned the marketing tools stuff I took the decision to keep the two separate.  There are a couple of videos over there which may make you chuckle just now but to be honest, it needs some TLC and I have been creating new videos which are not uploaded just yet.

Please be so kind as to hop over to there and subscribe to my new channel as this will motivate me highly to get these new videos up there for my new subscribers to see.

Thanks so much.  Let me know what type of videos you would like to see.  I'm a bit of an expert at cooking for the SCD diet to help intestinal issues so come on over and tell me what more I can help you with.
